Time for a mixup! CAS Week is now officially DEAD!

RCHK is way overdue for a rebranding! Have you previously been able to quickly recognise the term CAS Week, what it means and what it entails for Year 12, after being told about it year after year in assemblies, by teachers and thoroughly drained students? Well no more! A clunky term with a dry, IB-mandated (🤮) acronym has been replaced with another, clunkier term. Say hi to:

emb@RC week! Or EMB@RC week? Maybe Emb@RC week?

I have seen it written in all 3 different ways, but the most important question is:

What do these funny letters mean?

Generally the first time someone reads the… “text” above the first few things they think of are:

  1. What?

  2. Emb…at… RC?

  3. Oh, EMBARK!

  4. Why?

  5. It’s replacing CAS week??

Being the stupid person that I am, I missed step number 3 and called it “emb at RC” for a whole week until someone told me what the actual pronunciation was. I blame the inventor of the email for this.

Additionally, until a week ago I doubt that any student knew that it was, in fact, an acronym! Surprise! One acronym has been replaced with another, although whether this new one is better or worse is up to you, dear reader. Emb@RC stands for:

Exploration 🚶

Motivation 🏋️

Boundlessness ♾️

@Renaissance College

A few things that I want to address:

  • Do they want us to pronounce @ as in AT or A as in “embark”??? Confusion! Explain!

  • If it is an acronym, shouldn’t it be all caps all the time?

  • The terms:

    • Exploration: okay

    • Motivation: okay

    • Boundlessness: huh? (Although to be fair to the creator I also can’t think of something that would work for embark)

  • And most importantly:

  • WHY?

More change for the sake of change? Haven’t we already been saddled with a ton of acronyms? Don’t you hate it when your EOTC gets in the way of your I&S, making you doubt your ability to handle the WOW, then IB with the increased pressure from IAs, TOK and EE, making your OAGs complete CRAP? Okay, that last one isn’t an acronym, but I’m writing this for CAS at RC in HK so it’s OK. ← that isn’t even an acronym either -woron
