Every hour of our life is a marathon. Every minute is a choice. Every second is a thought. With so much going on around us, why don’t we know? Why aren’t we more aware and mindful of our surroundings? The grass is green and the sky is blue! There hasn’t been a prettier moon in months! Why hasn’t anyone said anything about this? Why can’t we just take the time out of our day and appreciate it? Appreciate being alive. Appreciate the world we’re living in. Appreciate the scenery and greenery.
There’s so much around us.
We race towards the finish line with joyous faces, never thinking about the process but only the result. The moments that shine the brightest are usually the most nuanced, the most insignificant actions and words that you take for granted. There are times like these where words can’t even begin to describe how you feel, but so many of these same moments are forgotten. We let go of them, too preoccupied with our everyday life. We say that we live in the moment, but it really is the past and the future. It’s always “When will we get there?”
It’s never “How will we get there?”
This hyperfocus on the final destination extends beyond our everyday life. When remembering historical events, the most common knowledge relates to the result of the affair. We all know that The Allies won World War 1, but do any of the non-history students know why it started? How did The Allies end up winning? Without answering these questions, history is bound to repeat itself.
Thankfully, most people in positions of power are (hopefully) well read. They’re educated and have most definitely spent time ruminating for countless decades, thinking about what could’ve been better and what could’ve been done. However, for us leymen? We just keep moving. We never look back. From one result to another, we keep pushing forward as a society.
It’s in the name. If we think about it, the signs have been there all along. As we approach the finish line, our final destination, it really is a permanent end. Something else that’s permanent? Death! No coming back from that! That’s why the importance of deadlines simply has to be emphasised. There really is no coming back. Whether the focus is on the results or the process, it’s all the same in the end! You just hand it in and get it done and over with. You’ll be finished with it, indefinitely. There’s no chance to make revisions, no chances for change. It is the most permanent piece of work you’ll be submitting for whatever assignment or task delegated to you.
But why can’t our employees do that? Why are we always so behind and flustered with our work? Please guys, meet your deadlines. For the love of god... We’re barely staying afloat. Please…
