“What do you want to be in the future?”
We’ve pondered this question for as long as we've had the mental capacity to ponder.
For years and years, decades and decades, individuals have wandered alone in the sea of opportunities, searching for an answer.
What is it that we wanted to be? Lawyers? Doctors? Garbage collectors?
All were viable options to us at the ripe old age of ten. We were too young. Too young to decide for ourselves, to young to know. Yet, when responsibility far too heavy to burden was thrusted upon our small, brittle shoulders, we pulled through.
We moved forward with our ignorance as a shield, blissfully unaware of the harsh realities life has to offer us. We moved forward with boundless optimism, hoping for a brighter future to fall into our hands. We moved forward with a zest for life that many of us have now lost, never to be returned. It is now that we face the insurmountable consequences of our choices.
With the relentless pressure and onslaught of assessments and exams, it’s no wonder why mental health has been at an all-time decline. Some have the support of our parents, but that won’t help us realise our goals. Some have the support of our peers, but that isn’t nearly enough to propel you to Cambridge or Oxford. Some even have the support of their teachers, motivational but not nearly enough to sustain the stability needed to trudge through the IB programme.
Such a needlessly needy program fostering toxic relationships with everyone involved.
Thankfully, after slaving away for hours on end for the three feeble points gained in TOK and EE alongside the six other irrelevant subjects on hand, we are finally offered salvation. Some may call it the light at the end of the tunnel. Here at the FE counselling department, we are cared for. We are loved. We are appreciated.
Remember, it’s called counselling for reasons surpassing just advice for your future
Our dreams, hopes, and desires are all weighing on the very few pieces of paper offered by the FE counselling department. They are here to seek, to strive, and to serve (very in line with our school motto). They will always be here for you, no matter what. The overdue guidance forms and missing CAS activities will chase you to the ends of the Earth, and so will they!
You can’t get away, they will always be there for you. No matter what.
All up until you reach your final destination.
