A Day In The Life Of A Homo Economicus

Updated: Jan 14, 2021

Joe Smith is an unemployed 25 year old man who lives off of rice and water for all of his 3 meals everyday.

“I’m just at my happiest when I’m spending the least money as possible whenever I can. My utility’s all maxed out!”

As a result of his frugal lifestyle, Smith lives under a bridge in the dull town of Economics with his shabby blanket and his Lamborghini. An inspiration to many of his fans all around the world, Smith shows that one does not need to be a hard worker to live the life that they’ve always dreamed of.

Smith was granted the title “Most Rational Person” in his high school graduation. While speaking about his past, Smith described his time in high school as being the roughest time of his life as he was a victim of a severe case of bullying.

A couple of his former classmates decided to dish in on their impression of Smith:

“He’s the most ignorant, selfish and condescending person I’ve ever met. All he ever does is look down on you. I could say that I bought a nice meal from that nice spaghetti store and he’d be like ‘you’re just wasting all your money on something that isn’t worth anything’. He’s so annoying.”

“I know he trades stocks a lot. One time he overheard that I was going to invest in this small startup and he just laughed in my face. The next day, my stocks absolutely tanked. I have no idea how or why he even knew any of that. I think he’s taking insider trading secrets but don’t quote me on that. "

“He’s pretty annoying but he does save me a lot of money. He told me that the town right next over was selling the same exact T-shirt I wanted for $15 less. That was pretty cool but he’s still probably the worst person I’ve ever met. I hate him.”

Even now, gossip has been rampant around the small town of Economics. However, Smith has dismissed these claims, stating that they were clear defamation of his character.

“All they’ve ever done is make fun of me. Hit me. Call me names. And call me stinky. But now they’re upset because I’m just better off than them. They’re just jealous that I don’t need to pay any bills. I don’t need to live in the rigid structure of the corporate ladder. We were all born with an equal opportunity but I was the smarter one who prospered. They laughed at me while I hid in the dark but the darkness shaped me into who I am today.”

Nonetheless, many people have expressed negative sentiments towards Smith for other reasons. One shopkeeper noted that Smith would always loiter around his jewellery store with shifty-looking behaviour. A couple of weeks after this pattern had started, he noticed that a few of his shelves were looking awfully empty, especially the ones that were used to store the most valuable products such as high-quality sapphires and rubies. The total amount of goods stolen added up to approximately 700 million dollars. “I don’t even know how he did it. I never took my eyes off him for a second there. It’s insane.”

The local police station chipped in on the topic of Smith as well. “He’s a well-known kleptomaniac in our department. He goes around all of the shops in town just stealing things. It doesn't even matter what type of shop it is. Walmart, Gucci, McDonald's, you best bet he's stolen something at each of these places. Every time we catch him, he starts screaming like a maniac about how we’re infringing on his free rights. Unfortunately, we do have to let him go because his fans keep travelling here to protest each time. He’s a public nuisance. If he’s not stealing, he’s bound to be reselling goods at a lower price than our local shops and driving them out of business. He’s ruining the economy!”

The town hall has released statistics on their local economy just last week. Inflation has been growing at an unhealthy rate during the past year with the report stating “Joe Smith” as its core cause.

When asked about his views on buying things. Smith retorted that there was no reason to ‘buy things’ when you could get them for free. He refused to say how.

The police appeared not long after as they attempted to drag him to jail upon which he resisted fiercely. “You have no proof of anything! You’re violating my rights!”

An officer walked out of the scuffle with bite marks all over his arm.

Despite these few conflicts, it appears that Smith will not be leaving Economics soon as his rationality and machine-like intelligence has earned him the nickname as ‘The Pinnacle of Economics’ from his many fans.
